Peoria Symphony Guild Youth Concerts

This rich tradition has been sponsored by the Guild for more than 50 seasons. More than 6,000 students in grades 3-12 from central Illinois experience a live orchestra performance at the Civic Center Theater. The special soloist is the winner of the Young Artist Competition.

Volunteers are always needed to help staff the traffic lines, usher in the theater, and maintain the canteen. Call the Symphony office at 637-2787 if you are interested in helping.

Once again this year, all concerts will be performed in one day to reduce expenses. Students in grades 3 through 12 are invited to attend one of the three concerts along with one free chaperone per 15 students.

Performing this year with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Music Director David Commanday will be the winner of the Young Artist Competition, Summer Victoria Lusk. In addition to earning the privilege of performing with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, the Ms. Lusk will receive the Alice Oakley Memorial Scholarship.

Three 45-minute concert performances are planned for Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at 9:45 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 12:45 a.m. The program will be:

Sibelius: Finlandia
Grieg: Piano Concerto in A Minor, 1st movt.
Britten: Young Person's Guide
Copland: Buckaroo Holiday (from the ballet RODEO)

The youth education committee within the Peoria Symphony Guild conducts "Introduction to the Orchestra" classes in fourth grade classrooms. Volunteers will be contacting school principals to set classroom dates.
